Creative Community Space

Nomad Studio at Side Rail is open by the hour to host classes, workshops, demonstrations, markets, meetings, and other community gatherings.

Our space enables

  • Direct, hands-on, interactive experiences for the community in making and exploring creativity

  • Community through curiosity, creativity, and making

  • Development of creativity and artistic pursuits

  • A low cost model for creative people to make money through teaching

Two ways to use the space

  • Creative Session — a hands-on, interactive class, workshop, or demo: art making, movement, music, theater, or teaching a skill. $30/hour, 2-hour minimum.

  • General Use — markets, meetings, and other non-creative use of the space. $50/hour, 4-hour minimum.

Guidelines

  • Members have priority for scheduling, including weekend use.

  • Non-member proposals submitted by the quarterly deadline (see schedule below) will be reviewed and allotted time slots based on availability and host preference. After the quarterly deadline, bookings are approved first come, first served. Proposals must be submitted at least 1 month prior to the requested date.

  • Bookings are limited to 4 hours per day, including setup and cleanup, so more than one can happen per day. Available time slots:

    • Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday — 9am–1pm

    • Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday — 1:30–5:30pm

    • Monday–Sunday — 6–10pm

    • (These limits may be waived case by case.)

  • All modalities are welcome for Creative Sessions, so long as they're hands-on and interactive: art making, theater, dance, drumming, or teaching any skill. We especially encourage sessions that highlight the emotional and intuitive sides of creativity, and that build in collaboration and interaction alongside skill-building.

  • Sessions may be free or fee-based to attendees, at the host's discretion.

  • Side Rail charges hosts to use the space. Fees may be waived or reduced case by case.

  • Non-member bookings are assigned a Side Rail Member Liaison, who communicates with the host and opens/closes the space for them. The liaison attends free of charge.

  • Side Rail doesn't guarantee or find attendees. Hosts are responsible for advertising, promoting, and recruiting their own audience. We'll post public events to our calendar, newsletter, and social media if submitted by the quarterly deadline.

  • Hosts handle their own setup, cleanup, and supplies, and must leave the space as they found it.

  • Side Rail requests, but doesn't require, a discount for Side Rail members.

  • Side Rail Collective reserves the right to decline any application that doesn't align with our mission of providing community space for creative groups and events. Approval isn't guaranteed and is at Side Rail's discretion.

Available equipment

Access note

Our space is on the second floor with no elevator, so it's not a fit for anyone who needs step-free access or has to haul heavy gear up a flight of stairs. There's a parking lot nearby with a 2-hour limit, which works for quick loading but not for longer bookings.
