Circle Singing

Side Rail Collective ~ Art Studio is now hosting 3rd Saturday Circle Singing with facilitator, Debby Boland Watt.

We will take off SINGING! Debby gives each choral part, building the piece as she goes. Free form and spontaneous, these beautifully complex pieces are then held as soloists sing over the patterns. The layering of rhythmic and melodic patterns, call and response, vocal percussion and free improvisation require attentive listening skills and a firm grasp of many rhythmic forms.

Debby is happy to join Side Rail Collective as its dedication to creating an inclusive and vibrant environment for creatives is just what Circle Singing is all about.

Gather & Devour

Join us for the opening of our newest gallery show Gather & Devour:

Food is a love language. A story, a history, a ritual. We gather to devour the flavors, the memories and stories those flavors bring, and to connect in those sated moments. Food can also bring triggers, more complex memories and stories that generate longing and loss. Gather & Devour aims to explore ways we are moved by food, sweet and salty both!

Organized by Lily Hotchkiss and Francesca Rosati

As always or resident members studios will be open for viewing during this second saturday Art Attack event!

Collective Conjurings

Collective Conjurings

In case you miss the opening, the Raku show will be open Saturday February 24th 12-4

Please attend the opening of the Side Rail Gallery’s first Raku show, “Collective Conjurings: Six months of Raku”; as part of Georgetown Art Attack. See six months of Side Rail members’ pieces fired under the new moon, From June through December 2023. See video and stills of the Raku process.

In the first session, we’re inspired by images with archetypal meaning then hand build clay sculptures. We begin the session with first writing our private heart’s desire, then burning them to ashes and imbuing the ashes into the clay.

At the second session, about a week later, we glaze our pieces, break for lunch, then raku fire your pieces in an outdoor kiln.

It takes about 30’ to reach proper temperature. We open the kiln at white hot heat and submerge the wares into sawdust and smoke them.

When smoke dies down, we cool the piece with water til we can handle them.

After properly cooled, we scrub the soot off and spectacular colors begin to arise from the soot, with fantastic black crackle patterns shot through the glazes. Occasionally we get a beautiful metallic sheen. It’s hard to describe, its an awe inspiring part of the process.

Raku firing done this way is a means to enter willingly into transformation. The term ‘alchemical’ here means involving a seemingly magical process of combining transformation and creation into something completely unimaginable. Collective awe and joy erupt as we in turn observe one another’s pieces emerge transformed from this amazing firing process!

Organized by Syd Shera - lakshmicollective.com
You can sign up for raku workshops at the show! Contact Syd for dates and more info. Fun idea! Bring a group of four to six people and raku together!!

Eel and the Electrician Opening \ Art Attack

Electricity is all around us keeping us warm, connected and alive. Mixing this current with water is typically dangerous, however, the eel elegantly sustains life in such an environment. Inspired by the rebellious nature of our aquatic friend and the energy that electricity provides, this show invites you to explore lawlessness, illumination and elegance in the form of art.

Join us at the Side Rail Collective on October 14th for an art show and the soft opening of Eel and the Electrician - a burgeoning lifestyle market and mocktail bar. We provide a collection of high quality products with a punky aesthetic and curated mocktails with a fermented jolt.

Artists from the Side Rail Collective art studio will portray their works alongside local artists and friends at the historic Bertoli Hall in Georgetown, Seattle. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be offered in the Hinge Studio - a resident architecture firm - space.

Eel and the Electrician is a burgeoning lifestyle market making its soft debut at this show. We will provide a mocktail bar and a pop-up shop offering a curated collection of housewares, trinkets and apparel.

A COOL SUMMER BREEZE

Join us September 9th from 4-8pm for open studios, art, raku and the opening of our new show - A Cool Summer Breeze:

There are few things more refreshing than the whisper of a cool summer breeze to break the hot spell of summer. You know the feeling – your hair blowing in the breeze as you sit on your back deck sipping on a refreshing Frosé or swaying in the cool evening air, caught up in the music and conversations of dear friends. The rustling of the leaves as they tussle and mingle with the passing air. Tip your head back, close your eyes and let the cool, calming tones transport you –– > straight to The Side Rail Collective to check out this new group show, featuring an array of work by local Seattle area artists 😉
